Rajgad is the fort which 'Shivaji Maharaj' had a lot of history related to him. Rajgad was known as the king of forts and capital of "HINDAVI SWARAJYA". Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort in between 1646 to 1647 with other fort Torna.
The forts where equally important to Maharaj but Shivaji Maharaj made Rajgad as capital of the forts because it was bigger than Torna in its size and was very hard to approach. Shivaji Maharaj reconstructed the forts with Three machis which are called as Suvela,Sanjavani and Padmavati machi.

Rajgad saw many wars from 1960 Mughal king Aurangzeb sent his commander Shahiste khan to capture Rajgad but he couldn't succeed.Shahistekhan captured many villages nearby Rajgad ,but on April 6th of April 1663 Shivaji Maharaj raided his troops came back to Rajgad. In 1665 Rajgad was attacked by mughal sardars but they god a strong fight from the marathas and they couldn't succeed. Rajgad was of the forts which Shivaji didn't loose while signing the 'Treaty of Purandar', in the same treaty he lost has 23 other forts.

When Shivaji Maharaj was jailed by Mughals he escaped from Agra on 12th september 1666, he returned to Rajgad. Shivaji Maharaj's first son Rajaram was born on 24th February 1670.Rajaram Maharaj took control of the maratha empire after the death of brother Sambhaji Maharaj in 1689 at the hands of Aurangzeb. In the period 1671-1672 Shivaji Maharaj shifted his capital to Raigad from Rajgad and moved all his operations to Raigad from Rajgad.

On 3rd April 1680 a bad day for maratha empire Shivaji Maharaj died From there after empire saw a downfall till 11th march 1689 Sambahji Maharaj(Son of Shivaji Maharaj) was killed by mughals and there after they captured Rajgad by Kishore singh Hada (Mughal Sardar). Marathas were not aware of the death of Sambhaji Maharaj and as the aim of Marathas was enough they united at the foot hills of Rajgad and any how captured the fort.

Way from Pune to Rajgad Fort
From Pune there are ST(State Transport) buses are available from Swargate to village Gunjawane. Start early in the morning buses are Available to Gunjawane and you can also take buses to velha and get down at Gunjawane Phata, take share rickshaws and local transport to the village.

By road one can take route from Pune-Satara road and reach Nasrapur Phata from there it takes you to Gunjawane. Condition of the road is on Pune Satara highway is good but once you take the village road it is not in good condition but the work of the road is under construction.

 The major attraction near Rajgad is another fort which is Torna its Height above sea level is 4700 ft.This fort was captured by Shivaji Maharaj at the age of 17 this fort was in early stages of establishing 'Hindavi Swarajya'.The construction of the fort proove that the fort is from 13th century when malik ahmed a bahamni ruler till 1470 to 1486.Torna is also called as Prachandagad .As in Marathi it means Huge and its true seeing its huge expanse it really means "Prachanda",As in Marathi it means Huge and its true seeing its huge expanse it really means "Prachanda".
 Locals say when Shivaji Maharaj was building the fort Maharaj got Hidden treasure from which he rebuild Fort Rajgad which is in the same region.the fort remained with 'Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj' even after the 'Treaty of Purandar'.
Torna helped maharaj after esacapping from agra he came here before rajgad the capital fort. Locals say when Shivaji Maharaj was building the fort Maharaj got.
