History of Anjanvel Fort
Anjanvel
fortification, called Gopalgad, was manufactured by the Bijapur lords
in the sixteenth century, and reinforced by Chhatrapati Shivaji around 1660, some
Persian verses on a level elongated stone give the date 1707 and the
Builder's name Sidi Saat.
The verses are: Whoever manufactured another
chateau when he was summoned, did it not have a place with an
alternate? God is everlasting and all else is subject to death.
At the
point when the kind ruler, the light of the world, gave the request, the
fortress was made, which he couldn't live to see.
Sidi Seat (constructed) the fortification. Composed
on the tenth of Zil Hajj, the first year of the rule, Hijri 1119 (A.d.
1707).] And enhanced by his child Sambhaji (1681-89).
In 1699, the
fortress was assaulted and caught via Khairat Khan, Habshi of Janjira
(1680-1708), who included the lower stronghold, Padkot. [jervis' Konkan,
92.] In 1744 (December), Tulaji Angre Sarkhel took it from the Habshi,
and named it Gopalgad, including the upper stronghold, Balekot.
From
him, in 1755, it went to the Peshva, [nairne's Konkan, 92.] and on the
Peshva's oust, tumbled to British constraints on the seventeenth May
1818. [nairne's Konkan, 116; Service Record of H.m'sXxist Regiment.
(Marine Battalion).]
The fortification remains on a noticeable and
summoning point on the south shore of the stream hypnotizing a large
portion of a mile from Anjanvel. It covers seven sections of land and
is encompassed on three sides by the ocean, and on the fourth by a
profound dump now mostly filled.
There is no
complete line of outworks, stand, or two secured courses heading down
to batteries. The fortress dividers, manufactured of stone and mortar,
are extremely solid, around twenty feet high and eight feet thick, with,
at some separation from one another, twelve bastions equipped with
guns.
The fortification is still in great condition. South of the
stronghold is a profound trenching eighteen feet expansive. There are
two entryways, one to the east, and the other to the west.
On
either side of the west entryway was a guardroom. The inside of the
fortress, once brimming with structures, still has hints of little
houses. There are likewise three wells with a copious supply of water.
Close to the wells is a building said to have been the store-room, near
it, a silo, and at a little separation, the Governor's royal residence.
