The fort is said to be ancient and the satvaahan dynasty built the fort. It is proven because there are rock cut mountain steps in the mountains and stone-cut water cisterns covered with stones. The Yadavas of Devgiri controlled the fort from 1271 to 1308.
Later the region of devgiri went in the hands of Bahmani Rulers so as the bhaskargad also went in their control. In the year 1629 Shahaji raje revolted against the nizamshahi by which the fort went with Shahaji Raje. Mughals gained the control of Bhaskargad in the year 1633.

But later it went with Peshwas and at last in the year 1818 British captured the fort. Bhaskargad is also known as Basgad in the trimbak range. Which is near the "Trimbakeshwar", known among the 12 "Jyotirlingas" in India.
The importance of the fort is that it was built to guard the 'Gonda' pass which was a trade route to reach Nashik from the West coast in ancient days. The mountains in this range were characteristically shaped to build the forts in which the fort of Bhaskargad was mainly a basalt rock mountain.
