History of Surgad Fort

Surgad or God's Fort in the north-east of the Roha taluka and eight miles east of Roha town, includes of a long and very tight narrow running south from the scope of hills which divides Roha from Alibag and Nagothana.

On either side extend level rice lands from which the hill is divided by a thick band of trees. Towards the top, the hill turns into a mass of conventional dim basalt, just about exposed to vegetation.
In the middle of it and the principal scope of hill on the north runs a valley or gap around 150 feet deep, and to the south, the land extends into a low scope of forest hills, which, after over two miles, fall into the plain close to the town of Poi.

From the north, east, or west, the hill is uniquely strong and rough, with sheer walls of rock without a hint of workmanship. Surgad can be climbed either from the north or from the south. From the south, the way leads up the western face of the fort, over rocks and firewood, to an almost level green ledge, on which stands a cutting-edge temple of Ansai Bhavani.

Leaving the temple on the left the way prompts the southern end of the fort, along the substance of the rough hill, which is the boss and in many spots the main safeguard of the hill. Most likely the way was once given a flight of stone steps. A couple of stay at the base of the ledge, yet most are gone and all the remaining parts on the rock are a couple of made gaps.

The hill top is particular, an about level edge around 75% of a mile long and no place more than 150 yards expansive. By this way, the way to the fort is around 800 yards from the south end of the edge. This piece of the fort contains to number of investments.

It is just about independent, a characteristic bastion with a little rectangular supply, which is said never to hold water after the end of March. There is also a demolished temple of God Maruti, of which the base and an extensive picture of the god are all that is cleared out.

This point orders a remarkable view to the south and east. To the south a since a long time ago lush
branch runs from Surgad near the focal scope of hills, which isolate Roha into about a balance. From the tight space between them, the Kundalika or Roha River can be followed east to close to the point where it issues from the connecting Sudhagad peta.

Close behind this point, two hills, of no incredible height yet to a degree of outstanding appearance, mark the town of Jamganv in the amazing east of Roha. North of these are two other minimal withdrew hills, near to the town of Kudli. Behind them, a progression of parallel goads stretch, from the line of the Sahyadris, north, till they are covered up by the scope of the hills to which Surgad has a place. Close to where they vanish is the sustained top of Kurdu or Visramgad on the border of the Manganv taluka.
