History of Malhargad Fort

The fort was built by Panse who was a Peshwa Sardar he was appointed at the "Tofkhana" of the Peshwas.This fort is the last fort which was built by Marathas in 1775 hence it is also known as "TARUN KILLA" which means young fort in Marathi.It is also called as Sonori fort because it has its base village named Sonori.Their is a palace at the Sonori village.This fort was used to keep an eye on the 'Dive' Ghat and the Pune Saswad route. fort is in well condition and has two temples which are Khandoba temple and Mahadev temple.



Time to reach the top
It takes around 45 minutes from Sonori and 1 hrs from Zendewadi.

1 day is enough to see Malhargad because not much is available on Malhargad to see.

Best time to visit the fort 
You can visit the fort any time but rainy season is best time to enjoy. 

Water Availability 
Not available on the fort and not suitable for drinking one has to carry water every time you visit the fort.

Accommodation Availability 
Available but only 5-10 peoples can stay in the temple of lord Mahadev.Peoples can also stay in Sonori and Zendewadi in the Zilla Parishad schools.

Places to visit on the Malhargad Fort

Nothing much is available on fort to see but a few temples which are lord Khandoba temple and lord Mahadev from which the Mahadev temple larger and lord Khandoba temple is smaller. A pond which is filled with water only in rainy season and winter season.

Pune - Saswad (32 kms) - Sonori (6 kms). Way from Pune one has to reach Swargate bus depot their are many buses available from 'Swargate-Saswad' there are many PMT buses after every 25 mins available to 'Saswad' and from 'Saswad' their are around 3 buses daily to sonori from their you can easily see 'Malhargad'.

From Mumbai there are ST (State Transport) buses and local transport available to Nashik, distance between Mumbai to Nashik are 167 kms, From Nashik there are ST (State Transport) buses and local transport is available to Hatti (Base village of the Fort), distance between Nashik stations to Hatti (Base village of the fort) is only 9 kms.

The lake is also called as Wadki Talav this fort was named as Mastani because Bajirao Peshwa and Mastani, a court dancer were in love and affection to each other.Hence he named it as 'Mastani lake'.The lake was constructed by the Bajirao Peshwa who passed in 1740.The lake was under construction even after he passed away.Lake can be easily spotted on the way from dive ghat.

This temples Shivlinga was said to have been originally installed by Sage Changadeva(12th/13th century AD). Jeernoddhar of Temple by Sardar Ambuji Purandare in 1700 AD.
