History of Panhalgad Fort

Panhalgad was built by the king 'Shilhar bhoj Nrupsingh' this fort was originally belonged to the tribal people nag and was known as Pannagryala. Shivaji Maharaj won Panhalgad in less period of time which is 18 days because Shivaji Maharaj took advantage of the death of Afzalkhan which weekend the Adilshah and Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort.
Shivaji Maharaj spent more than 500 days here.Siddi johar the Bijapur general attacked the fort in which Shivaji Maharaj ran away from here but 'Shiva Kashid' disguised as Shivaji Maharaj and fought in place of Shivaji Maharaj with Siddhi Johar bravely.
In 1673, Kondaji farjand won the fort with just 60 soldiers with him. Panhalgad was made capital of Kolhapur in 1844 Britishers captured the fort.

Panhala
Famous spot near the Panhala is Someshwar tank which is made of rock while constructing Panhalagad the location of well makes everyone think how a well can be digged on the massive structure above the sea level.
The architecture of the well and tanks is excellent from that period. Panhala actually makes small hill station, many of its other qualities such as its geographical importance made this important in many Maratha empires. But Shivaji Maharaj converted this beautiful hill station into a fort by building fort walls here.

Sunset Point
This point actually is on the north side of the fort it is on the smaller fort compared to Panhala. This northern location helps it being best sunset point.

Sajja Kothi
The word "Sajja" refers to as punishment in Hindi and whereas "Kothi" means sell.One can witness architecture on this three storied building built in 1008 AD. This place also had a place in history Shivaji Maharaj used to plan his military operations in this place.
Sambhaji Maharaj was imprisoned here with his father for his intentions and other activities. It is surrounded by greenery and wonderful mother nature, you can see Warna Valley from the top.

Teen Darwaja
The word "TEEN" means three in Marathi and Hindi it is a big entrance to the fort which have three gates in order to safety of the fort but Britishers attacked Panhalgad from this entrance.
There is a well near the 'Teen Darwaja' which was used for sending messages to the enemies from this pond,it was the safest way to contact the enemy without any major problems. Teen Darwaja offers a cultural heritage to the visitors.

Botanical Garden
This garden have A fantastic variety of flora and many types of trees and forest it have big lawns and botanical garden people come here as picnic spot and as well as to relax this place looked and maintained by forest department.the model the old fort is displayed here near the entrance of the garden.
Peshwe park is also a good place to be seen here it is full of food stalls and children play area this park also provides boat rides and horse rides in the evening which covers the whole park.the timings of the garden are from daily 7.00AM to 7.00PM daily.

Jyotiba Temple
This temple is dedicated to Jyotiba aka Dattatreya. Referring to a myth to destroy devil Ratnasur three hindu gods Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva combined to form 'Jyotiba' to kill the devil Ratnasur. The temple gets crowded in "Pornima" which is a full moon and Chaitra, Vaishak months.
