History of Saptashrungigad Fort

Not much history of the fort is mentioned but the temple of Goddess jagdamba is famous on the fort. This fort is also known as the Wanicha dongar falls of the satmaal mountain range of Nashik district. The temple is one of the "Three and a half Shakti Peethas" of the whole Maharashtra and has most importance among all the Devi's.
The goddess jagdamba is also called Wani devi popularly and hence the mountain is called as 'Wanicha dongar'. Steps are built to reach the temple. The fort is located above the temple but entry is prohibited because of its religious importance.
Saptashrungi temple This temple is dedicated to goddess jagdamba and is among the 51 shakti peetas in India. The saptashrungi devi idol is 10 feet tall and have 18 hands which hold weapons such as arrows, lotus, trident, bow, sudarshan chakra, lance etc.
The goddess of jagdamba is self-manifested. The idol is covered with orange coloured sindoor all year around. It is called saptashrungi because 'Sapta' means seven and 'Shrungi' means peaks it is surrounded by seven hills.
It is the highest peak in the sahyadris. And visited most of the time in a year among the religious places in Maharashtra. The Devi is also called as Mahishasur Mardini. Mahishasur was devil which devi killed and saved the people from him.
We can the buffalo head carved near the steps. There are 500 steps to reach the temple. It will take 30-40 mins from the base to reach the top today a route is made on which one can reach using private vehicles.
The mountain has many types medicinal plant known part from the Dandarkaranya forest. In the Ramayana hanuman took medicinal plants from this mountain hills. We can see 108 kunda's (water reservoir) on the mountain. Markandya rishi's hill is located in front of the temple.
Festivals such as Navratri, Gokul Ashtami, Gudhipadwa, Laxmi Pujan, Chaitrotsav, Mahashivratri & Kojagiri Pournima are celebrated in the temple.

Achala fort
The fort stands at a height of 4040 feet above the sea level and a medium grade trek. No history is mentioned about the fort. This fort was used as a watch tower seeing the top of the fort. The fort has few water cisterns and temple on the top, caves is filled with water. 30 mins are enough to see the whole fort.

Rawlya - jawlya
Rawlya fort is the hardest fort among the both it requires proper trekking equipment's to climb the fort. On the fort rawlya only remnants of the houses and water cisterns can be seen. Jawlya is easier than the rawlya.
There are some caves water tanks and cisterns which do not have potable water in them. We can see Dhodap, Ikhara, Kanhergad, Kanchna and Indrai from the fort. Monsoons should be avoided to visit the fort.

Markandya
This fort stands at a height of 4383 feet above the sea level and a medium grade trek. We can see kamandalu or the water pot, mayur khindi or the peacock's hill. According to garrison this fort was used as the watch tower or a residential place.

Dhodap fort
This fort was in the hands of peshwa after the Mughals and made this fort as the capital of nashik region. The fort has a long history related to ragunathrao peshwa.
We can see water tank on the top in which idol is lord hanuman is present. Cliff named shembi is on the fort whereas cliff named ikhara is ideal for climbing. There are caves and temples on the fort.
A cow stone on the fort is said to be moving inside the hills of the fort and it happens on the day of "Vasubaras". This stone moves inside length of 4 grains. You can plan Achala and ahivant in a single trek and sapta shrungi, markandya, Rawlya- jawlya, and dhodap in the near by.
