History of Underi Fort

Underi fort which is also called as Jaidurg is a fortified island near Mumbai Harbour and to the south of Prong's Lighthouse. Underi Fort is a neighbouring fort of Underi and currently lies in Raigad District. The islands of Underi and Underi are served as one of the landmarks of ships entering Mumbai Harbour.

In the year 1680 CE the fort of was built by Kihim of Siddis. The Marathas had attacked the fort but they failed to capture. Again in 18 August 1680 during Sambhaji's Reign Marathas attacked another time,but the Siddhis were ready to attack in that battle 80 Marathas were killed in Mayank Bhandari's son was also killed. 

Yet again they attempted another time on 18th July 1681 in which it caused a great damage to the Siddis, but again the fort was not won. The fort was gone in the hands of British and they gave the ownership to Angres dynasty in the year 1824.

The best time to visit the fort
One can visit the fort till end of the monsoon season to the starting of summer. This is October to March.

Pune to Underi By Bus
There are buses available from Pune to Alibaug the timings are View Bus Time Table , Thal is located at about 8 km north of Alibaug, ST (State Transport) buses ply between Alibaug to Thal, and from Thal beach, you can hire a boat which will take you at the Underi fort.

From Pune Local Trains are available to Lonavala, and from Lonavala there are local trains available to Khopoli, from there reach Pen and then Alibaug, from Pen you can take a Bus, Taxi or Autorikshaw for Alibaug, Thal is located at about 8 km north of Alibaug, ST (State Transport) buses ply between Alibaug to Thal, from Thal beach, you can hire boat which will take you at the Underi fort.

From Pune via Mumbai Pune Express Way reach Lonavala, from Lonavala Reach Khopoli, from there reach Pen and then Alibaug. From Pune Alibaug is around 120 km From Alibaug Thal is around 8 km. from Thal beach you can hire boat which will take you at the Underi fort. Pune - Lonavala - Khopoli - Pen - Alibaug - Thal - Underi.

Mumbai to Underi By Bus
From Mumbai there are ST (State Transport) buses available to Pen, from there reach Pen and then Alibaug which is around 28 kms from Pen. From Pen you can take a Bus, Taxi or Autorikshaw for Alibaug. Thal is located at about 8 kms north of Alibaug, ST (State Transport) buses ply between Alibaug to Thal, and from Thal beach, you can hire boat which will take you at the Underi fort.

There are trains available to Alibaug from Mumbai. View Train Time Table from Alibaug Thal is around 8 km. From Thal Beach you can hire a boat which will take you at the Underi fort.

Khanderi fort
Khanderi Fort is situated in the Thal village of Kihim. The island of the Khanderi fort consists of two high hills one at the north side and the other at the south. The islands of Khanderi and Underi forts were inhabited. 

Khanderi Fort was captured by Shivaji Maharaj in 1679 and oversaw the building of the fortification walls. The fort was built to keep an eye on Siddis on the Murud Janjira fort. On the fort there were two wells which were used to supply water to the forces within the temple of Sri Betal.

Kihim Beach - Kihim Beach is on the north side of the fort of Underi Fort all the way spread by the coconut trees, flowers and many more... It is the tourist spot where large numbers of people come to visit on Kihim beach
