History of Pavangad Fort.

Pavangad is also known as Pavitragad it is a twin fort of Panhalgad. Pavangad is a hill fort in the Kolhapur District, Maharashtra three kilometers east of Panhala Fort from which it is separated by a valley. The chief defense of the fort is a sharpened rock twenty feet high in length. In most places the sharpness of the rock was made strong by artificial sharpening and it was made even strong by the parapet wall of Kolhapur black stone fourteen feet high in length.

Pavangad was later built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj when he won second-time Panhala Fort in the year 1673. Aurangzeb renamed the fort as ‘Rasulgad’ after capturing it later. British army destroyed this fort in later 1844. Main important thing was that there was a well of purified butter, which was used to like medicine of injury in the time of war.

In 1827, under Shahoji I (1821–1837), Pavangad and its neighboring fort Panhala were given over to the Britishers. In 1844, during the time of Marathas (1837–1860), Panhala and Pavangad were captured by protestors who seized Colonel Ovans, the inhabitant of Satara, when he was on an expedition and imprisoned him in Panhala.

A British force under General Delamotte was sent against the protestors and on 1 December 1844 destroyed Panhala fort walls and captured the fort. Shortly thereafter in 1844, the two main entrances of Pavangad were destroyed brutally and the fort was demolished. The fort though empty has a good supply of water.
