History of Hargad Fort

The history of Hargad is not prominent as there were no battles on the fort. The village of Mulher is the base village from here we can see the fort. Other forts such as Mulher Fort in the front, Moragad on the right, and Hargad on the right can be seen.

This fort is situated higher than the Mulher fort in the front. The top of the fort can be called as a plateau because it is much flat and wide. We can find remnants of the fortification walls on the fort, runs of the temple, and a few water tanks or cisterns.

The water from the tanks is not potable that is why one should carry enough water on this fort. The fort can be seen in 1 hour with the 'Kappar Bhavani' temple in a cave on this plateau. Besides this not much can be seen on the fort.

If finished seeing the fort you can also walk towards mulher fort or return to the base village mulher. A two-three day trek can complete Five Forts Salher, Mulher, Hargad, Salota and Morgad.

Salher fort
This fort is highest forts in the Maharashtra and the sahyadris at a height of 1567 meters and 5137 feet above the sea level and a medium grade trek. This fort is in the baglan region which fertile land for agriculture and forests.

Kokanis and Bhils are tribes that live in these hills and the perimeter of the fort is 11 kms of are about 600 hectares. Salher Fort has an important history Shivaji Maharaj won this fort with the battle Ikhlaas Khan and Bahlol Khan.

The battle proved a bloody war, around 1,20,000 soldiers of Shivaji Maharaj fought and 10,000 of them lost their lives in this war. Shivaji Maharaj captured around 6,000 horses, 6,000 camels, 150 elephants, heavy gold ornaments, gold coins, and expensive cloth from the enemies.

This war increased the fame of Shivaji Maharaj because of the courage and strategies shown by the troops of Marathas under his leadership. This big battle was never won by the Shivaji Maharaj and the Marathas.

We can see temples, and water tanks, there are three caves on the fort and a 'Maruti' temple in front of them these caves are good for shelter, the top most part of the fort has a ruined temple of Parshuram. The best part of the fort is we can see the whole Baglan region and the peaks of Mangi-Tungi, Nhavigad, Tambolya, Hanuman Tekdi, Mulhergad, Hargad, Moragad and Salota, Ajantha - Satmaal range, the fort of Dhodap and the peak of Ikharya on the south.

Salota fort
This fort stands at a height of 4250 feet above sea level and a medium-grade trek. While going to the fort there are three entrances and all these are in good condition.
Water tanks on the right and remnants of the fort can be seen. It can take 3-4 days to complete Salher, Salota, Moragad, and Hargad in a single trek.

Moragad fort
This fort is at a height of 4450 feet above sea level and is an easy grade trek. Actually, this fort is the part of Mulher fort geographically seen. No prominent history is available about the fort.
On the fort we can see water cisterns reservoirs and some remnants of the old buildings besides this nothing can be seen on the fort and the view of other forts such as Hargad, Mangi-Tungi, Nhavigad, Tambolya and Hanuman Tekdi.

Mulher fort
This fort stands at a height of 4290 feet above sea level and a medium-grade trek. The history of this fort is quite big. In short Shivaji Maharaj captured this fort in the year 1672 with the Fort Salher after this Mughals gained this fort back.
But in 1752 according to the Treaty of Bhalki Khandesh region went to Marathas. But in the year 1818 fort went into the hands of the British.
