The fort of Kavnai which is said to have been built by the Mughals, was ceded to the Peshwas by the Nizam in the virtue of the treaty which was concluded after the battle of Udgir in the year 1760.
In the year 1818, when the Marathas were defeated at Trimbak, Kavnai, like Tringalwadi and fifteen other forts fell without a struggle to the British. Captain Briggs visited the fort after his surrender and found two houses at the foothill of the fort where the Garrison used to live.
When the scrap was reached the ascent was easy. The scrap was not very high, but was perpendicular which was climbed by rock-cut steps which were not so easy. The area from the top of the fort was very small with the water supply and for the Garrison, the houses were in good condition.
Now in the year 1880, the fort is not in good condition. With the sprinkling of Gujarat Osvals Vanis, the base village of Kavnai Fort is inhabited by the Marathas, Kolis, and Thakurs. A thriving class of Osval Vanis settled permanently in Kavnai and visited Viramgam which was their Native place in which the marriage ceremony and other occasions used to take place.
The chief traffic of the villagers was in Grain, pulse, oil seeds, and other considerable transactions in rice. A temple of Kamakshi Devi is there which is ruined, to whom the offerings are made such as coconuts, betlenuts on the occasion of Dassera. Large numbers of people are present at that time.
