History of Pauni Fort.
Pauni, in the Bhandara area, is 82 kilometers south-east of Nagpur. The present town, around three kilometers south-west of the Wainganga River, is engirdled by medieval forts decorated by forcing passages, of which those arranged to the west are very nearly in place. The proud forts, which at a few spots are surviving to a stature of around 20 meters, were surrounded by a canal.
The old channel has now transformed into a little regular lake and is called Balasamudra. The fort was built by the Gond ruler Bakht Buland in the early eighteenth century and was assumed control by Raghuji Bhosale I around 1710 AD.
Pauni, an old fort, has yielded the ruins of one of the best Stupas of India and unique proof of a prospering Buddhist foundation. The Pauni fortification has yielded the copper plate award of Pravarasena II of the Vakatakas who managed this locale. So it is possible that the dirt of the fortification does a problem to a period much sooner than the medieval.
