word which means Island named from the word Jazeera. Janjira
Fort was built in 15th century by the Martha - fisherman Chieftain - Ram
Patil on a small scale.
Janjira Fort was built to protect his peoples, in
those days pirates and thieves would attack them and loot them, these
peoples were also known as "medhekhot". Siddi commander

fort and built the new fort which was built in 22 acres which was made out of
stone and much bigger than the previous one. This took place in some were
between 1567 to 1571.
This fort was stronger and had enough power as it
was under the control of siddi's who were connected with the Mughal
Emperors. The Portuguese, the British and the Marathas could gain
the forts after their repeated attempts because of the siddi's.
The great Maratha ruler Shivaji Maharaj attempted to cross the 12
meters high granite wall but couldn't succeed in all his attempts because of
the structure.
After Shivaji Maharaj his son Sambhaji Maharaj attempted
to capture the fort by tunneling into the fort but he also did not succeed in
all his attempts.
