Sagargad which is also known as Kheddurg (खेडदुर्ग) is a hill fort which was built to watch out the beaches of Alibaug and Dharamtar River. Till the establishment of forts like Khanderi, Kolaba and Sarjekot by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the responsibility of security of the beach around Alibaug was on Sagargad alone.
Shivaji Maharaj won the fort from Adilshaha in 1660 A.D. It is said that Shivaji Mahaaj saw the islands Khanderi and Underi from the fort and chose to support Khanderi. This was to keep a look out for the trade way used by the British. Sagargad was one of the 23rd forts gave over to Mughals in the settlement of Purandarin 1665 A.D.
Shivaji Maharaj won the fort again after he came from Agra. Against the revolution after the death of Sambhaji Maharaj, Sagargad was won by Siddi of Janjira. In 1698, Kanhoji Angre, Bhivaji Gujar of Kulaba and naval boss Sidhoji won back the fort from Siddi.
Later Kanhoji Angre chosen Tarabai against the battle in between Tarabai and Shahu Maharaj for the power. Anyhow in 1713, Balaji Vishwanath Peshwe decided a deal between Kanhoji Angre and Shahu Maharaj. In that deal along with Sagargad, 16 forts were given to Kanhoji.
After Kanhoji's death, the ownership of Sagargad gone in the hands Yesaji. There was an argument between Yesaji and his brother Manoji. Manoji looked for support from Portuguese and won the fort from Yesaji.
In 1738 A.D., Sambhaji Angre won the fort from Manoji. The ownership of fort went to British after defeating Marathas in the war at Pune. Seeing the attractive view and average air, General Fuller and some British officers built rest houses on the fort.
The best approach to achieve the fort is through Khandale town situated on Mumbai-Alibaug way. The path to the fort is the way which is on the left half of the street towards Alibaug. It takes 2 hours to reach the top. On the path to the fort, one can see "Dhondane" falls.
Right over this fall is the Siddheshwar Temple and an old religious community. Primary door of Sagargad is in weak state. Sagargad is in the 'Y-shape' if seen from the top view. On the left half of the fort of this "Y" is a tall hill called 'Vanartok'.

Sagargad is constructed by 4 meter tall walls, and the fort inside is constructed with the help of 5 bastions. There is a channel close to the east side of the fort which is currently ancient. There is an unknown entrance here. We can enter the bastion by moving over this wall.
There is a small temple here which represents statue of Lord Ganesh and Mahishasurmardini Devi (Goddess Durga), and a Shivalinga. There is a little tank close to the temple which is refreshed from spring water source through a nose called Gomukh or Mouth of a Cow.
Near the temple is a tomb with a lady's hand cut on it. This is called "Saticha Mal" and is believable to a Sati. On the left appendage are the remainder of the rest houses.
