History of Sumargad Fort

In the past, there was a festival in the name of the goddess. During this festival, an incident took place in which villagers of both villages died falling from the cliff while balancing the pole. Hence after which it was shifted to Rasalgad.

The fort does not have any prominent history. The fort Sumargad is still in good condition it is completely built in black stone. The fort has 16 guns on the fort. The entrance to the fort is difficult and has a tough climb to reach the fort.

Good trekking experience is required to reach the fort it is very difficult to access the fort. There is rock climbing on the straight rock surfaces on all sides of the fort. Some water cisterns can be seen on the fort. Shivlinga and idol of goddesses Bhairi Bhavani, Zolai, Vaghjai and Navlai in one cave.

The route to the fort is a bit confusing hence you should ask villagers to guide the route to the fort. We can see Sahyadri forts such as Vasota and Makarangad on the east and Valatai forts of Palgad and Madangad. You can also trek Mahipatgad and Rasalgad.

We can also see river Vaghnadi and the villages Mandve, Vadi, Jaitapur, Devghar and Ainavali. From Mahipatgad it is a 2.5-hour walk in the mountain hills, from Rasalgad it is a 4.5-hour walk in the mountain hills.

Mahipatgad
Ramdas swami teacher (Guru) of Shivaji Maharaj considered Mahipatgad as his base. But later he permanently shifted to Sajjangad near Satara. The fort was started to make stronger but Shivaji Maharaj left construction in halfway. Presently the fort is in ruined condition.

A little study can show the history of the fort and Shivaji Maharaj history. Mahipatgad is at a height of 3090 ft above sea level and a medium trek. Mahipatgad was built by the 'Mahipat' who actually built the fort.

On the fort, we can see six gates, the Kotval gate, Lal Devdi on the north-east side, Pusati gate on the east side, Yeshwant gate on the south - eastside, Khed gate on the south side and Shivganga gate on the west side, Khed gate on the south side.
There is the temple of Pareshwar and a strong building, two ponds near the temple. We can also see Christian tombs that were inhabited in the year 1960. A few water wells and plateau.

Rasalgad
Rasalgad at a height of 1772 ft above the sea level and easy grade trek. This fort is situated in the Jawali forest region. Along this trek we can also plan Pratapgad - Madhumakarandgad - Rasalagad - Sumargad - Mahipatgad.

On the fort we can see the entrance, after which we see is the temple of Hanuman. Canons are placed on the walls of forts. There are in all 16 canons on the fort. The top of the fort is basically a plateau and we can Zolai temple on it.

A deepmal and a tulsi plant are kept in front of the temple. A small lake in which water is potable fort drinking. A citadel can be seen ahead in which remains of castles and remaining parts of canon can be seen. There are proofs of room which was used for storing grains.
Nearby forts are - Rasalagad, Sumargad , Mahipatgad. On the way to Sumargad you can also complete Pratapgad and Madhumakarandgad.
