Peth Fort (पेठ किल्ला)

Peth fort is also known as Kothaligad, which is situated in Sahapur taluka of Raigad district. Peth fort is a very small fort in Raigad. Places nearby Peth fort are Tikona, Lohagad and Tung fort which are in Raigad District.

History of Peth Fort

Peth fort which is also called as Kothaligad (कोथालीगड) is a small fort situated to the east of Karjat near Murbad road of Maharashtra. Peth fort is the famous trek in Karjat area, because its height is small and it is easy to climb. 

At the base of the fort there is a small temple, a big cave and also a chimney which looks like a tunnel which is on the top of the fort. There is a pinnacle which is carved from inside which forms a staircase for reaching the top. 

There are two water tanks one near the cave at the base and another one at the top of the fort.

The carvings of the temple and caves of Peth fort are from 13th Century. The cave was captured by the British in the year 1716. Then on 2nd November 1817 the fort was recaptured by Marathas which was under the leadership of Bapurao who belongs after the generation of Bajirao.
Again on December 30, 1817 the Peth fort was recaptured by British and they had the fort till 1862. The local people used to say that this is not actually the fort but it is like a lighthouse because the directions were used to given to know about the progression of the enemy.

Tikona fort which is also known as Vitandgad (वितानगड) is a Dominant hill fort in Maval. Tikona fort is situated around 60 kilometers from Pune in Kamshet. The height of the fort is 3500 feet

The name Tikona means "Triangle". On the fort there is a temple of 'Trimbakeshwar Mahadev' (त्रिम्बकेश्वर महादेव), seven water tanks and some Satvahan caves.

Lohagad

Lohagad fort is situated in Lonavala in Maharashtra state of about 52 kilometers from Pune. Lohagad fort is 3389 feethigh above sea level. The fort was under the empire of Maratha and after that it was under the Mughals for 5 years.
In the year 1648 Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort, but in 1665 Shivaji Maharaj was forced to surrender the fort to the Mughals by Treaty of Purandar.




Tung


Tung fort is situated around 60 kilometers from Pune and 12 Kilometers from Malavali railway station. The height of Tung fort is 1075 meters above sea level. The water is surrounded by three sides of the fort when the Pawna Dam was built. Tung fort is also called as Kathingad fort. The word 'Kathin' means difficult.
